Sunil Kumar Chakravarty was born in 1916 in Tongail, Mymensingh (now in Bangladesh) into an affluent family that valued education above all. He received his M.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Calcutta University and was one of the top rankers. He with his brilliant academic record joined the RAF (Royal Air Force) in pre-independent India. Sunil Kumar got married to Monica Bagchi and went on to toke up his first posting in Ambala.
A scientist at heart, with the dawn of independence he moved on to working at the National Archives of India and concentrated on developing new technologies in archiving for which he spent some months getting trained in the USA. Upon return to India new opportunities opened up and he joined the newly created Indian Police Service as an officer and spent some difficult years in rural areas Of Bengal. The scientist in him continued to thrive throughout his life. He was a member of the Indian Science Congress and never missed their annual event; and whenever possible presented papers.
In the Iast 10 years of his working life he served in the Embassy of India in Brussels and from there he went on to be a senior member in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York in 1970. He will be fondly remembered by several Bangladeshi diplomats who had sought refuge at the Indian Mission in New York during their freedom struggle and was looked offer and fed at his residence.
After retirement even though he had advanced in age, he took immense interest in the functioning of the Rural Medicare Society initially as a member and later on as the President (1993-1997) and worked with enthusiasm and vigour along with his doctor friends to establish the present premises of this rural hospital, It is mainly due to his visionary capability and farsightedness that we were allotted this land by the Delhi Government to build a 50 bedded hospital.
He loved nature and wildlife and even while he lay on his bed, unable to speak, he loved to watch the programmes like Animal Planet, National Geographic and Discovery.
